Description

It still gets me to call what's basically a rock a wild animal, but whatever fits I suppose. Pogonodon, what they say is Unique to the John Day fossil beds in eastern Oregon.

And becasue I'm a nerd, I'll say it's a nimravid, NOT a cat, the skeletal differences are slight (ossified auditory bullae and I'm told some claw morphology I have to look up) but it drives me nuts when in books or pamphlets when they call nimravids like this and Dinictis 'cats', or 'saber tooths', saber tooths are felids, they're in a different family than the nimravids.

part of the issue is there are many many "sabertooths". It is a feature that has shown up in many lineages, from nimravids and cats, to creodonts, early synapsids, dinosaurs, even salmon! The term "sabertooth" only refers to the dental morphology, and not the animal. Also Pogonodon is known from more than just John Day, although some of the best specimens are from there!
